Rojava News Agency’s Arabic editor, Suleiman Ahmed, has been missing for 82 days. After visiting his family in Aleppo, he was detained at the Peshkhabur (Semalka) Border Crossing by units affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on October 25th while returning to the Federal Kurdistan Region. Since that day, there has been no news about Ahmed.
Upon receiving information that Ahmed had been taken to Duhok city, his lawyers approached the Duhok Security Forces. Although it was informally acknowledged that Ahmed was in their custody, he was not allowed to meet with his lawyers. After facing criticism, the Duhok Security Forces were forced to issue a statement six days later, accusing Ahmed of “engaging in intelligence activities” and denying that he was in their custody. In response, the Duhok Court granted the lawyers’ request to meet with Ahmed. This decision officially acknowledged that Suleiman Ahmed was being held in detention. However, when the lawyers went to the Duhok Security Forces with the court order, they were not allowed to meet with Ahmed and were subjected to physical violence and threats.
Despite the attacks and threats, the lawyers continued their investigations and discovered that Ahmed was being held in one of the unofficial detention centers of Parastin, the intelligence agency of the KDP.
Despite calls from journalist organizations and civil society groups, the KDP administration has not made any statements regarding Ahmed’s situation. Rojava News Agency officials, who are urging for Ahmed’s fate to be disclosed to the public as soon as possible, have recently filed a complaint with the United Nations (UN).
